The concert was part of the Astroworld music festival, a two-day, weekend event beginning on Friday. Approximately 50,000 people were gathered on Friday night when the injuries occurred, according to the Houston Fire Department.

In 2015, Travis Scott pleaded guilty to charges of reckless conduct when he verbally encouraged fans at Lollapalooza in Chicago to climb over security barriers and onto the stage.
